Title: National Diabetes Prevention Program: An Urgent Intervention for Kentucky
Session Description: This session will provide a brief overview of the burden of diabetes in Kentucky and describe the urgency of reducing that burden. The CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) will be explored as an evidenced-based lifestyle change program to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. At the end of the session, representatives from Clover Fork Clinic and Juniper Health will share their experience in attaining CDC-recognized Diabetes Prevention Program status.
1) Describe the urgency of increasing access to the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) within Kentucky communities.
2) Discuss general features of the National DPP including possible roles a federally qualified health center could play.
Program Faculty: Janice Haile RN, BSN, CDE, MLDE, Kentucky Department for Public Health, Kentucky Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (KDPCP)
Biography: Janice, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, has over 30 years of diabetes experience and currently works as part of the state staff with the Kentucky Department for Public Health’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. For 20 years Janice worked as the nurse half of a diabetes team in a seven county area (where her job responsibilities included professional education, patient education, community mobilization, diabetes awareness initiatives, and coalition formation). For the past 14 years, Janice has been part of the state's diabetes program (responsibilities have included development and implementation of: a statewide diabetes assessment, a statewide diabetes newsletter, a web-based diabetes resource directory, an annual statewide diabetes symposium, and statewide activities surrounding the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). Janice received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Kentucky and has been a certified diabetes educator (CDE) since 1987.
