- Services The Kentucky Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) are a collaborative effort of the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center, the University of Kentucky Medical Center, and eight Area Health Education Centers. In conjunction with the universities, the AHECs work within their communities to provide student and resident educational opportunities away from a university setting. They also assist in the recruitment and retention of health professionals, develop health education and career awareness programs, and provide continuing education programs. An advisory board, composed of community leaders and health care practitioner representatives of the region directs each AHEC. Each center is staffed with a director and support staff who work with the universities, community health care facilities and practicing health care professionals.
